Purchased in 2016 outside of Barcelona, Spain. Shipped from Belgium to Halifax and registered in Canada. Amazing vehicle that has been serviced and worked on by Volkswagen mechanics over the last 4 years. All mechanical records have been saved.
Van has been professionally rebuilt ($20k invested in parts and labour over four years); very little rust; $4k in recent bodywork; $1500 to reupholster and re-foam seats; $3k to import from Europe -- not the same as American Eurovan models.
Features the original 1.9TDI engine with rebuilt cylinder head, rebuilt transmission, fuel injection pump, shifter (selector ball), brake system (new rotors, pads, ebrake cables, rear calipers, and brake fluid), suspension (Upper and Lower suspension ball joints on both sides + shocks), and new starter system (glow plugs, starter motor, etc.).
Tires are 2 years old with 25k kms,
Van has new water pump, battery (plus a spare battery in perfect condition), alternator, muffler, steering rack boots, and even windshield wipers. Head lights have been checked and are secure with new bulbs. Most recently had the timing belt, Hepu tensioner, camshaft seal, and elring valve cover gasket changed; oil change (runs synthetic) + new pan; new Left Rear wheel bearing changed; replaced coolant flange and fabric fuel return lines. All mechanical records and original documentation have been saved. (Major work listed below.) Note: This is not a Canadian winter vehicle. It should be stored in winter or taken to the United States.
Pros: Runs, drives, and looks amazing. Reliable camper van with fully functional camper interior: back bench transitions into a bed.
Swivel seats in the front (recently reupholstered);
cabinet for a fridge with changeout shelves; closets for clothing; propane cabinet with connections to stovetop; cutlery drawer; sink (not connected).
Speakers are originals and sound great.
Manual transmission (and manual windows).
Power steering works without any problems. No holes in exhaust.
No fumes in the cabin. Great fuel economy.
Almost all wires and hoses have been replaced.
Cons: European vehicle, not made for Canadian winters. Sliding door’s key hole was damaged when someone in France tried to break by jamming something in there while I was grocery shopping.
The rear bench could use a fabric change or wash. A new floor would be the finishing touch for the interior.
Rust work is required around the windshield and eventually on the roof.
Air conditioner doesn't work, but it heats well.
eBrake line to rear brake cables freezes below -1˚C.
Power steering belt is the next thing to be replaced.
Should be stored underground for the colder months. Despite four new glow plugs, a new battery, and a new starter motor, it is still a diesel without a block heater and you would most likely have trouble starting it below -17˚C, unless you were to install a block heater. The only other issue the car has is the handbrake freezes when temperatures drop below freezing, despite the new rear ebrake cables. Brake lines, rotors, pads etc have all been cleaned and changed. Line from handbrake to the brake line is rusty, so handbrake should only be used above -1˚C, or replace that one line.
