For auction is my 1969 Mazda SUA 1500 Deluxe sedan in original Lark Beige with contrasting chocolate trim and red carpet. It would have been a very special car when new being an early Japanese model and has mostly survived the sands of time. It was bought new from Waters Garage in Roseville NSW (now the SVM Kia showroom) and I am the 3rd owner.
I have owned the Mazda for 10 years now and the original intention was to build a sleeper rotary project but that has never eventuated. It is now time to pass it on to someone else who has the passion and time to restore it. I still believe it is too good to wreck and deserves a full restoration as these early Japanese vehicles are becoming very rare and rarely come up for sale.
The engine has been replaced at some time in its life to an 1800 VC block which I think is from an early 929, it retains its original Borg Warner 3 speed auto gearbox and 4 wheel drum brakes. The vehicle will run and drive but not stop due to it being parked up and unused for the last 10 years. It is currently parked in a position which is easily accessed by a car trailer or Tilt Tray. When I drove it home in 2010 I noticed the steering had a bit of slack in it which will need to be addressed before returning to the road. Apart from that, there were no notable strange noises or quirks and kept up with the traffic quite well.
The body work requires full restoration. The paint, stainless and chrome still retains a shine but there is rust in the panels which needs to be cut out and repaired, but nothing too hard for the savvy mig welder. It has had noticeable previous repairs but I think it is past the point of a quick 'tart up'. I have a spare set of rear doors and a few miscellaneous spares which are included in the sale. The engine bay has minor surface patina which I have just brushed over with fish oil occasionally to prevent deterioration. All badges, handles, light lenses and hub caps are present and in good condition.
The interior condition overall is 'not bad', The dashboard and crash pad are in mint condition with no cracks and all switches including the AM radio work. The front bench seat is worn and the stitching is split although the design is simple so it should be easily reproduced by a competent Trimmer. The original carpet is still fitted which is worn and faded but once again easily replaced with a pre moulded carpet. (believed to be available from Tru Fit in Melbourne). The rear seat is still usable and not worn or split, presumably due to the ultra rare venetian shade fitted in the rear windscreen. I have never seen a venetian offered for sale in the 10 years of ownership and no one reproduces them. The head lining is still usable and just needs a good clean. The original Mazda key is present and operates the door locks and boot lock but the ignition barrel has been changed at some stage and uses a different key. The boot retains its original and undamaged vinyl floor covering which just needs a good clean too.
More pictures of the vehicle are available and form part of the description.
The vehicle needs to be towed away, unfortunately I cannot assist with delivery. It is located in Oberon NSW, about 90 minutes drive west of Sydney.
The number plates in the photo's are not included.
In summing up, I would consider the vehicle to be in 'condition 3'. A mostly original vehicle with expected faded paint, panel rust, moderate mechanical work and trim repairs required.
Thanks for looking, I will answer any questions you have and Good Luck with your bidding!
