Remember when Toyota’s Supra was a major player in the sport coupe market? This example is a survivor, having just crossed the line into “classic” territory this year. This is a one-owner car from Texas with no modifications and is still on the original Texas actual mileage title. It comes with the original window sticker of $46,178.00 which included premium stereo and leather trim package upgrades.
Made in Toyota’s Motomachi factory (A22) on October 1, 1993, the car was sold on March 31, 1994. It left the assembly line with the following options – premium three-in-one AM/FM stereo with extended-range speakers, cassette deck and CD player with seven-speakers and a subwoofer with power antenna and equalizer; armrest and rear spoiler.
The car’s curvaceous body wears Renaissance Red paint (code 3L2) and is in overall excellent trim, including large rear wing. The glass is clear and intact while the rear window has a defroster grid and wiper and washer. The engine bay is extremely tidy and the Bosch battery appears new. The lights are clear and haze-free while the bodywork is straight and solid. The color-keyed bumpers are in similar condition and fit tightly to the body.
This Supra rolls on Michelin Pilot Sport radials, size 235/45ZR17 in front, size 255/40ZR17 in back. Each tire is mounted to a factory aluminum alloy wheel. Those wheels are in very good order while the tires are in good shape with good tread life.
In that engine bay is a stock and unmodified twin turbocharged 3.0L DOHC, 24-valve, straight six-cylinder engine (code 2JZ-GTE). The engine and turbochargers were reviewed by a Toyota Certified Master Technician. Backing this motor is a four-speed automatic transmission (code A340E)as all Supras built in 1993 for the US export market were automatics only. Driver convenience features are abundant – air-conditioning, power and speed-sensitive rack-and-pinion steering, power four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock, cruise control, power locks, power windows, power seats and a targa roof. Safety equipment includes dual front airbags, traction control and the anti-lock brakes.
Inside, the tan leather front buckets and rear demi-buckets are in excellent condition, overall (code LA00). The tan carpet is in matching condition and there are black floormats in front. The neutral headliner is in very good order as is the four-spoke steering wheel. The instrument panel and inner door panels all echo the rest of the interior’s theme. The center console and shift lever fit in equally well and a Kenwood infotainment center replaces the factory stereo.
The A80, or fourth generation Supra, program began in February 1989 under various teams for design, product planning and engineering led by Isao Tsuzuki. By the middle of 1990, a final A80 design concept from Toyota Technical Centre Aichi was approved and frozen for production in late 1990. The first test mules were hand-built in A70 bodies during late 1990, followed by the first A80 prototypes being hand-assembled in 1991. Again, using subframe, suspension and drivetrain assemblies from the Z30 Soarer (Lexus SC300/400), pre-production of the test models started in December 1992 with 20 units and official mass production began in April 1993. The fourth generation of the Supra again shared its platform with the upscale Soarer coupé, sold in the U.S. as the Lexus SC. Although the two cars looked similar, the new Supra was more than 13 inches shorter than its luxurious cousin. The rounded styling, while modern, seems to borrow some elements from Toyota's first grand touring sports car, the 2000GT.
This redesign saw Toyota placing great emphasis on a more serious high-performance car. It featured two new engines: a naturally aspirated Toyota 2JZ-GE and a twin turbocharged Toyota 2JZ-GTE. For the export model (American/European markets) Toyota upgraded the Supra turbo’s engine (by installing smaller, steel wheeled turbochargers and bigger fuel injectors, etc.). Upon its launch in 1993, it was the first Toyota-badged vehicle to include a passenger airbag as standard (US-market only).
The twin turbochargers operated in sequential mode, not parallel. Initially, all of the exhaust is routed to the first turbine for reduced lag. At 3,500 rpm, some of the exhaust is routed to the second turbine for a “pre-boost” mode, although none of the compressor output is used by the engine at this point. At 4,000 rpm, the second turbo’s output is used to augment the first turbo’s output. Compared to the parallel mode, sequential mode turbos provide quicker low RPM response and increased high RPM boost. This high RPM boost was also aided with technology originally present in the 7M-GE in the form of the Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS), which is a way of managing the air compression pulses within the intake piping as to increase power.
For this generation, the Supra received a new six-speed Getrag/Toyota V160 gearbox on the turbo models while the naturally aspirated models made do with a five-speed manual W58 transmission, revised from the previous model. Each model was offered with a four-speed automatic with manual shifting mode. All vehicles were equipped with five-spoke aluminum alloy wheels, the naturally aspirated model had 16-inch wheels and the turbo models had 17-inch wheels. The difference in wheel size was to accommodate the larger brakes equipped as standard onto the turbo model but in Japan were optional extras. Both models had a space saver spare tire on a steel rim to save both space and weight.
Toyota took measures to reduce the weight of this new model. Aluminum was used for the hood, targa top (when fitted), front crossmember, oil and transmission pans and forged upper suspension A-arms. Other measures included hollow carpet fibers, magnesium-alloy steering wheel, plastic gas tank and lid, gas-injected rear spoiler and a single pipe exhaust. Despite having more features such as dual airbags, traction control, larger brakes, wheels, tires and an additional turbocharger, the car was at least 200 pounds lighter than its predecessor. The base model with a manual transmission had a curb weight 3,210 pounds. The targa top added 40 pounds of weight while the automatic transmission added 55 pounds. The fourth-generation model had a 51/49 weight distribution. The turbo model weighed 3,450 pounds with a manual transmission while the automatic added another 10 pounds to the overall weight. Weight distribution was 53 percent front/47 percent rear.
Competition to this Toyota in 1994 included Acura’s NSX, Audi’s S2, Chevrolet’s Camaro and Corvette, Dodge’s Stealth R/T, Mazda’s RX-7, Mitsubishi’s 3000GT VR-4, Nissan’s 300ZX 2+2, Pontiac’s Firebird and Volkswagen’s Corrado.
Documentation include original window sticker, manuals and service history including receipts.
Twenty-five years ago, Toyota’s Supra had had a decade-long run of popularity, competing against similar vehicles from Europe, Japan and the U.S. If you fantasized about owning one when you were in high school or college, isn’t it time to try reality and take this Supra for a test drive? Stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today and see it for yourself.
