Solid, great running and driving, tastefully upgraded, 1976 Ford F250 Custom (Custom was a Ford trim package designation) 4X4 Highboy pickup truck. This truck was built in San Jose, CA and shipped to the Ford DSO in Salt Lake City where it was sold new. It then went to to northeastern Utah where it was used as a ranch truck before a modest cosmetic and mechanical restoration about 20 years ago. It has been lightly used since.
The interior is in decent, mostly original condition with working gauges (except temp) and an uncut dash (a newer cassette player was added at some point). And it's still in the original Jade Metallic Green. All glass is good and the doors open and close solidly (but need new weatherstripping). Newer seat upholstery is in good condition. It has a cool aftermarket headliner with lighting and speakers. Floorboards have typical Ford rust-through (I removed the most brittle sections already and treated the remainder with a rust neutralizer to prevent spread). Patch panels are cheap and readily available in the aftermarket or just leave it as is.
The exterior has common Ford rust-through issues on the cab corners and rear fender lips. When it was long ago painted white (to a low standard although the pin-striping looks cool) the left bed fender lip was repaired with fiberglass but the rest of the body has never had any prior rust repair (this is great news if you want to fix it because you are not undoing prior body work). I have treated exposed sections with a rust neutralizer to prevent spread. Again, patch panels are cheap and readily available in the aftermarket or just leave it as is. The body has typical bumps and bruises from use (nothing major) and the bed was replaced with a matching unit at some point. Most exterior lights work. Please ask for the detailed pictures I have available which include close-ups of everything.
The running gear is is in great shape with upgrades to improve reliability and drivability. The old 360FE V8 was replaced with a rebuilt 400M V8 (with dual batteries and dual turbo muffler exhaust system) during the mechanical restoration. The 400M is generally regarded as a more powerful and fuel efficient engine than the 360FE which was designed in the 1950's. The swap was done to a very high standard. The original NP435 4 speed manual transmission and NP205 transfer case remain. Rear differential is a Dana 60 (with 4.10 gears) and the front differential is a Dana 44 (with locking hubs and disc brakes). The old, leaky, failure prone, and hard to repair 'ram assist' power steering was replaced with a much improved, well-respected, aftermarket, integrated power steering unit which costs almost $2000 prior to installation. This conversion was also done to a very high standard. Other than the clutch being a little grabby, the running gear is a super solid.
This is an awesome truck. It needs new tires but is otherwise a daily driver which can be put to use immediately. It starts, idles, shifts, accelerates, turns, brakes and stops very well. The mechanical bones are great and it primarily needs some cosmetic love. Or just enjoy it as the great driver it already is. Plus, the mechanical upgrades only improve its drivability. And the rust-through on the exterior body panels is tightly confined to the cab corners and rear fender lips. Vintage 4X4 trucks that haven't been horribly buggered up over the years are getting harder and harder to come by. My hope is it ends up with someone who will preserve and enjoy it or take it to the next level.
