1972 HOLDEN HQ MONARO CUSTOM COUPEThe HQ Monaro is certainly one of the most iconic Aussie muscle cars of all time. In recent years, the prices and collectability of these cars have soared, with everyone wanting a piece of the action. This 1972 Holden HQ Monaro has undergone a complete show quality build into a one of a kind show stopper that far exceeds anything that would have come out of the factory.The story begins when the current owner purchased the car nine years ago, it was running a small block V8 at the time and had an 80s styled interior. The car received some minor upgrades and was driven around for a few years before being pulled of the road for what was intended to be a mild freshen up and repaint.  As the story usually goes on builds like this, a minor freshen up snow balled into a full build over many years into what you see here today.The car was put on a rotisserie and taken back to bare-metal with new door skins, new sills and new rear quarters all fitted. It was a priority not to cut the car up from factory so body mods are only very subtle and minor with the HJ statesman style front end, tucked and boltless bumpers and shaved rear markers. Everything uses the factory mounts and bolt holes. Even the dash uses the factory screw holes. Once the shell was looking slick, Erick Gonzalez at PJ’s Custom Spray Painting laid down the beautiful, smooth Dulux Custom Blue including the undercarriage which is perfectly painted.Under the bonnet is an LSX454 – 7.6 litres of Gen IV small-block considered by many to be the king of LS donks. Producing 627hp in stock aspirated form, this one now makes over 1000rwhp thanks to a pair of Precision 6766 turbochargers. A Holley Dominator EFI system fires L98 coils to ignite the E85 provided by a MagnaFuel 750 and Bosch 044 pumps. Cooling is sorted thanks to an Aussie PWR alloy radiator with twin 12-inch thermo fans, which sits behind the air-to-air intercooler. A three-speed TH400 auto and PTC 3500rpm converter push the power down the line. One of the coolest features is the press button auto selector on the dash with Bluetooth connected paddle shifters on the steering wheel eliminating the need for a floor shifter. Powers is fed to the wheels via a Race Products sheet-metal nine-inch hanging out back chock full of good gear like 35-spline full-floater axles and 3.50:1 gears. Looking in the engine bay and underneath the car every single fitting appears to be a Speedflow item and braded lines are used where ever possible.On a hub dyno, 1112rwhp was recorded, despite only having 14psi and 14 degrees of timing in the tune. The car was built to be an absolute weapon but the owner told us “I always wanted it to streetable enough to throw the keys to my wife if I ever had too many beers one night and needed her to drive it home.”The HQ sits tough thanks to QA1 coil-over struts up front, paired with United Speed Shop Magnum control arms. In the back are AFCO double-adjustable coil-overs providing a huge upgrade over stock. Braking is also improved with a UPS upgrade kit on the front using HSV ClubSport R8 calipers and 330mm discs, and Wilwood disc brakes out back. The wheels are 18x7in Intro billets are wrapped in Dunlop 235/40 rubber on the turnin’ end, with beadlocked 15x10in fatties out back wearing Mickey Thompson 275/50 radials.The same high level of quality and finish extends to inside the cabin with a full custom retrim in Italian leather by Acherfield Auto Trimmers. Front and center are a set of Porsche bucket seats with custom diamond stitch pattern which extends to the door trims and trans tunnel hump. Benltley  style carpets are on the floor for a plush feel. A custom dash is complimented with a Holley touchscreen to replace the analogue gauges and a touch screen multimedia system. The boot is even neatly paneled out and trimmed to match with 2.7km of faultless stitching featuring throughout the whole interior.This is an incredible one of a kind build that despite its show style appearance, was always intended to be a tough street driven car.
